So when you pick up a Black Friday ad for a place like Best Buy or Target, buried somewhere in there you're bound to find DVDs on sale for $3 - $5, and they're usually movies you'd never want to watch. DVDs have hit such a saturation point that no one even bats an eye at a deal like that, but what if Blu-ray movies started approaching those prices?
We predict that some retailer this year will actually reach the $5 price point for Blu-ray. Whether it's the worst selling Blu-ray movie of all time or an insane loss leader item, Blu-ray movies will be a target this year.
The high-def format was already seeing pretty good adoption rates by this time last year. And 2009 was the first year we started to see significant Blu-ray sales on Black Friday, so this year is all about seeing how low they can go.
People can give away DVDs for free now, and they probably wouldn't make it under too many Christmas trees. They're just not seen as hot commodities anymore. But Blu-ray remains hip and hot, and consumers around the country are actively expanding their collections.
It's not really something most people would think about. After all, the glitz and glamor of Black Friday lies with the high-ticket items. To that end, there might be some good Blu-ray player sales, but they probably won't get crazily discounted. The installed base is already pretty high, and those who want it have been able to afford it as prices came down significantly over the last year.
So they're obviously not going to be front-page, headline sale items, but look for Blu-ray movies as you're flipping through the Black Friday ads. You might just come across a pretty tempting deal that's extremely light on the wallet.
