A mysterious appearance of an old lady in a classic Charlie Chaplin movie has made international headlines in the last days. Irish flimmaker George Clarke kicked of this meme by posting a segment of the movie The Circus on Youtube that shows an old women holding something to her ear while she talking. You can watch the video below (over 3 million views). It really looks like the women is using a cellphone and the time traveler mystery was born. Of course this is a totally illogical explanation, but it caught on. Maybe because it is Halloween season people like mystery stories. Now the mystery has been solved though. The device the lady is using is most likely an early Siemens hearing aid.
Siemens offered already in 1924 a pocket sized carbon microphone and amplifier device. The Chaplin movie The Circus is from 1928. Via CBS.
