Japanese Gadget Envy is Back.
Softbank launches two new Sharp phones that feature 3D displays that require no glasses. The new Sharp Galapagos 003SH and the Sharp Galapagos 005SH run on Android 2.2. Both phones feature a 3.8-inch autostereo screen. This 3D screen is actually a bit larger than what the Nintendo 3DS will have. Besides the 3D feature the 003SH and 005SH are pretty much standard Android smartphones running on a 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU. Expect the cameras have 9.6MP and 8MP respectively. The Sharp Galapagos 005SH has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Sharp and Softbank offer 3D movie content for these new phones including the new Shrek movie and Despicable me. Before the iPhone and the Android phones every gadget lover was looking to Japan in envy for their sexy phones with stunning cameras, TV feature and many more features packed in stylish and compact phones. That all changed and Japan actually got behind. The new Sharp Galapagos 003SH and the Sharp Galapagos 005SH have put Japan slightly ahead of the mobile phone innovation again. What is most important is that Sharp adopted Android. This way they get access to the apps and open up their platform.
With a 3D Android phone Sharp could also enter the US market. For now we can start to have gadget envy again, as Japanese consumers get 3D phones that do not require glasses.
