The power of Facebook got underestimated.

As reported last week, Lowe's hosted a Black Friday Sneak Peek party on Facebook last night. Lowe's offered a 90% off code to 100 fans and 900 20% off codes for a KitcheAid mixer. This was enough to take down the Lowe's online shop. Lowe's has over 200,000 Facebook fans. With so many fans you actually need crowd management. Apparently everyone attending the live event hit Lowe's shop at the same time taking it down.

A message on the Lowe's Facebook page says that they will post today how they will carry out the promotion to avoid this situation. A lot of fans who have been attending this event are pretty angry, leaving tons of comment voicing their frustration.

On the positive side for Lowe's, they gained over 70,000 fans in about 1 week. When we reported about the Lowe's Sneak Peek party announcement on Oct. 27, Lowe's had 130,000 fans. Now they have 201,347 fans on Facebook. The lessons to learn from this is that you just have to sell a heavily discounted kitchen appliance to dramatically grow your Facbook fan base and that you should not invite 200,000 people to visit you online shop at the same time.
