Best Buy Goes For 3D Hard Sell With COD: Black Ops Launch

The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops is so huge that Best Buy will have more midnight opening locations than it has ever had for a midnight game release. And as one of the most anticipated 3D game launches to date, the retailer will be pushing 3D products to the max.

"Best Buy is the ideal place for fans to pick up the game and get everything they need for the ultimate Call of Duty: Black Ops 3D experience," said Best Buy home entertainment group manager Chris Homeister in a statement.

Best Buy personnel will be on hand at the midnight store openings to encourage customers to buy 3D TVs and answer any 3D questions they may have. The retailer is also ramping up its 3D presence store-wide, with increasing inventory of 3D camers and camcorders, as well as 3D home theater packages.

While the PS3 has been capable of running 3D games since this summer, scant few have actually taken advantage of it, and all of them have been first-party games. Black Ops will be the first major third-party 3D console game release. And as such, it'll be available on the Xbox 360 as well, making it that console's very first to take advantage of the new stereoscopic 3D standard.

The game could potentially set a new launch day sales record, and Best Buy realizes that. That's why 700 stores across the country will be opening at midnight as soon as the calendar hits November 9. The list of stores spans 44 states - including Alaska and Hawaii - as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico. Sorry, North Dakota, South Dakota, Alabama, Vermont...even with the most important game launch in years, you still don't get a Best Buy midnight opening.
