Specifications

The Arctic Sound S111 Portable Speakers are compact USB powered 2.0 speakers. They have integrated volume controls and a 3.5mm input for playing MP3 players and other sources through the speakers. They have a frequency response of 50Hz to 25KHz and 4 ohms impedance. The cable is 1M long, the speakers have 4W RMS (2x2W), and the speakers weigh 494g.

In Use

The only thing that I can say almost universally about all of the notebooks and netbooks I have reviewed over the years is that the sound systems suck. The speakers used in notebooks and netbooks are tiny and often lack the volume to be heard clearly and never have bass to speak of. The Arctic Sound S111 Portable Speakers I am checking out today are a very portable way to fix that lack of sound quality on your notebook.

The speakers are small enough to be easy to take with you on the road or around the house. They have enough volume that you and a group of people can listen to music or audio from a movie without straining even if the room isn’t quiet. These speakers get all the power and connectivity they need to operate directly from the USB port on your computer. The volume control is integrated into the speaker so you can control the sound without having to go into the settings of your notebook.

The 3.5mm input means that you can also use the speakers with your iPod or iPhone and they sound good. If you just want to use these things with your iPod on the go, you can couple the speakers with the USB battery pack Arctic Sound has for mobile music with your MP3 player only. One of the best features of the Arctic Sound S111 Portable Speakers is that they are very cheap with a MSRP of under $16.

For that, much money you aren’t going to get the best quality in the world, but these speakers fare well considering their size and cost. The bass is passable, not the deep and thumping sort I crave for games and movies, but good enough for most fans. The overall sound is well balanced with more focus on mid and high range sounds. Vocals can clearly be heard and the voices on movies aren’t drowned out by the music and sound effects. This is a nice little set of portable speakers for the user on a budget.

Verdict

Pros

  • Decent sound
  • Easy to take with you
  • USB powered

Cons

  • Bass could be stronger

Conclusion

If you want something portable and cheap that will work on your notebook and with your MP3 player, the Arctic Sound S111 Portable Speakers are worth a look.
