The Apple MobileMe service costs $99 per year offering services like email, file storage, remote wipe, find my iPhone and more. Especially the security features like remote wipe and find my iPhone are very valuable in case you iPhone gets lost of stolen, but to pay $100 for it per year? Maybe Apple finally got it and will offer a free MobileMe service option for iOS devices soon.

MacRumors spotted several error messages in the latest iOS 4.2 builds that suggest that Apple will allow users to log-in with the Apple ID into MobileMe services. Additionally there are messages that refer to a free MobileMe service.

A free MobileMe service would be a very nice value add to the iPhone. I do not need email or the file storage, but remote wipe and find my iPhone would be really nice to have without having to pay for it.
