My daughter is six and my son is nine. When the GeoTrax Christmas in Toy Town RC train showed up at our door, they were both excited. The hardest part of putting the track together was getting it out of the box. The train parts are tied into the box with twine and it took a while to unpack. Once unpacked I had the track set up in about 20 minutes. You need to assume your little ones will not be able to set this track up themselves. The pieces are a bit hard to snap together. My daughter could not put these together alone, my son could but it frustrated him and took a along time.

The train has three cars and lights up. The works is powered by a bunch of AAA batteries that are included and are pre-installed. The bulbs on the various lights for the train and the decorations are LED and should last a very long time. The train is very easy to control with a hand held wireless control that only has forward or backwards. The middle spot is stop and the child pushes forward to go forward and pulls back for reverse.

You can make this go round your Christmas tree, but we opted to build the train in the playroom instead. My daughter really had fun playing with the train and pretending to help Santa deliver gifts .She did have hard time with the train a bit. If it falls off the tracks, she was unable to get all the cars back on. When I first let her start playing, I had not put the red bumpers on the corners.

Those parts are required, without them, the train falls off the tracks in the corners. The train can power up the slope for the bridge, but noticeably slows down when it does. Once set up and once you install all the bumpers kids can play without any supervision or help. That is assuming they don’t knock the train off the tracks. The train does not do a good job putting itself back on the tracks and chances are assistance from an adult will be needed to get things rolling.

The train station lights up as the train comes by and makes train sound effects. When the train goes over the bridge, holiday tunes play. If you don't want the lights, sounds or music they can all be turned off individually as well.

Verdict

Pros

  • Lots of fun
  • Can go around your tree
  • Kids love this thing

Cons

  • Train is hard for kids to get on the track

Conclusion

The GeoTrax Christmas in Toy Town RC train is a ton of festive fun for kids of all ages. This thing will be played with well after Christmas has one and gone.
