I just mentioned that NVIDIA would be providing Tegra chips to Tesla for the Model S EV. NVIDIA has also announced today that it will be providing GPUs to BMW for a wide range of vehicles including the Mini Cooper. The GPUs will be used to power the in-car nav system and the GPUs will be inside the entire range of BMW offerings.
The GPU will help the iDrive system get rich 3D graphics and support resolutions up to 1280 x 600 with a fast user interface and more. NVIDIA and BMW will show off a 5-series car at CES that uses the NVIDIA graphics tech.
I am certain that over the next few model years and as new models come out this year, we will see more and more automakers turning to tech like GPUs and multimedia processors to improve in vehicle navigation and entertainment. This will be the tip of the iceberg.
