The car folks at Edmunds were on hand at the Washington D.C. Auto Show and got to lay eyes on the cool Dodge Ram Hybrid truck that has been spied earlier this month. The truck was built with help from a grant given to Chrysler from the Department of Energy. Chrysler will take that $48 million grant and use it to build a fleet of 140 of the half-ton Ram trucks.
The Ram Chrysler has developed uses the 5.7L Hemi V8 with a two-mode hybrid transmission and an electrovaya battery pack. It can drive for 20 miles on electric power along and has overall fuel economy that is 65% better than the average non-hybrid truck.
The hybrid trucks will be on their way to fleet operators sometime this summer, but normal consumers will apparently not be able to get hands on the trucks. Consumers aren’t interested in hybrid trucks individually it seems, but fleet operators are under more pressure to be green.
