MWC 2011 Review: Jabra's Active Headphones are the Only Earbuds I Don't Hate

I hate earbuds with the sort of passion sane people reserve for crack dealers and politicians. My ears are "shaped all weird" according to my childhood pediatrician. As a result, earbuds slide almost immediately out of my right ear. And they hurt in my left ear. I can barely stand to use them when sitting still, and they aren't worth a damn for running.

So when Jabra's rep at MWC handed me a brand new set of Active earbuds, I was already planning which trashcan to throw them in. Thankfully, I decided to give them a shot first.

The Jabra Active comes with several sets of silicon earbud covers, designed to keep the buds comfortably in place during vigorous exercise. And they work. Not once has either bud slipped out of my ear. I've been using them on-and-off for the last four hours, and both ears are still pain free and comfortable. Best of all, Jabra says the Active is sweat-resistant. Which might mean I'll finally have a pair of headphones last longer than three months.

I also have pretty severe hearing damage in my right ear, thanks to a hilarious accident with a .45-70 Buffalo gun. So I like to listen to my music loud. As a general rule, over-ear headphones are the only products that offer enough depth of sound to keep me happy. But the Jabra Active is loud and crystal clear. I took a tour of two different packed convention halls. With my music at a comfortable volume, the roar of the crowd was entirely drowned out.

The Jabra Active headphones have earned a spot as my new running gear. We'll see how well they survive that punishment in a few weeks. For now, I'll just say that they are the only earbuds I do not hate. If you have weird ears too, this product is well worth a look.
