The 4.8" Display is Strange, Kind of Cool

I've just handled the weirdest handset ever. Acer's Iconia Smart is bold by any definition of the word. Rather than sticking to the standard display sizes- which hover around 4" for a high-end Android phone, Acer went with a 4.8" colossus. The Smart has a normal width, though, and the reason for the incredible length becomes apparent when you lay it on its side to watch a film.

As a media consuming smartphone, the Iconia's form-factor is without peer. The display is wonderful for watching movies or videos...and really weird for anything else. Every thing about this phone just feels odd, from its long and weirdly thin body to the strange, smooth rounded butt end.

It also lacks a kickstand, which seems like a glaring omission in a device built around widescreen viewing.

Odd doesn't mean bad, necessarily, and I came away from the Iconia Smart with an overall positive impression. The build quality is top notch, the 1.1 GHz processor handles video skipping with ease and the 8 MP camera records solid 720P video. This isn't the phone to end all phones, but it is a phone with a legitimately innovative design. Acer's Iconia line-up is looking better and better every day.
