Samsung Announces New TV Apps Coming Soon

Samsung getting new apps for Smart TVs

Apps have gone from nothing to a huge business in only a few short years. The first phone to really support tons of apps was the iPhone from Apple and today just about all phone makers have an app store of some sort. Samsung has announced that its app store that is just for connected TVs is getting more apps.

Smart TVs can connect to the web using wired or wireless connections. This connectivity allows the user to do all sorts of things that were traditionally only able to be done on a computer. You can check the weather, surf the web, and check sports scores and lots more with a connected TV.

Samsung is the first TV maker to announce its own dedicated app store for TV apps. The store today has announced that two new apps are coming with apps from HBO and MTV. The HBO app is HBO Go. It allows the user to get access to over 1400 HBO movie and show choices along with the soundtrack to the show and details about the cast. The app will be in the store for download later this year.

The app will let users watch movies and stream popular HBO shows like The Sopranos, Sex in the City, Deadwood and current award-winning series like Boardwalk Empire, Entourage and True Blood. The MTV app is MTV Music Meter and it allows music fans to discover, listen to, share, and interact with new music. The app is easy to navigate and has the top 100 trending artists based on social media buzz. It will link the user to audio, video, artist news, tweets, bios, and similar artists. The app will come to Samsung TVs soon and is already on Samsung smartphones.

“The support for Samsung Apps – from content providers to developer partners and consumers around the world – has been tremendous,” said Eric Anderson, vice president of content and product solutions, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. “As we look ahead, Samsung sees the opportunity to expand not only the breadth and depth of apps, but also how users interact with them, making it easy to discover and enjoy content across multiple devices in the home.”

Samsung also has a lot more coming for its Smart TV apps this year. Smart Hub will help the user organize their apps with a new folder features. The SDK for Samsung Smart TV developers will be offered to make developing apps for Samsung users easier. Samsung will also launch a new remote app this year that allows the Galaxy S and Tab to turn into a second TV screen and be used as a remote.
