Barnes & Noble Lands Exclusive Digital Children's Books for Nook Kids Collection

Digital books are a huge business today thanks to the Kindle bringing the eReader market to the forefront for most buyers. With the massive success of the Kindle, lots of spinoffs were offered by other firms like Barnes & Noble. One of the more interesting offerings from B&N is the Nook Color.

This is a touchscreen device with full color running the Android OS. The tablet was originally just for reading, but updates are coming that will allow the Nook Color to check email and play games as well. B&N has announced that it has landed some cool new exclusive kids books that are only for the Nook Color and the Nook kids for iPad app.

The new books are the first ever digital offerings from Nickelodeon and will feature SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer and Diego. Right now, B&N has 12 offerings in the collection from Nick and that number will grow significantly. Over the next month, the number will hit 20. The books include Camp SpongeBob, Happy Birthday SpongeBob! Along with Dora Loves Boots, Crystal Kingdom Adventures, Dora Helps Diego, Dora’s Sleepover and there are more titles as well.

“Barnes & Noble is proud to deliver the largest, richest digital collection for kids and families. Our technology enables families to read whatever, wherever and however they want. We are thrilled to partner with Nickelodeon to bring their much-loved characters and books to our NOOK Kids platform, enhancing what we firmly believe is the most enjoyable and imaginative digital reading offering for kids,” said Wendy Bronfin, Director of Product Management at Barnes & Noble. “Children of all ages love the NOOK Kids experience, and we are so pleased to collaborate with a leading children’s entertainment brand to welcome stories featuring SpongeBob, Dora and Diego to our best-in-class digital children’s reading experience.”

This might not sound like a big deal to those of you without kids, but parents that read on a Nook a lot know that their kids want to use the same gadgets mom and dad do. Having some cool kid's books that are interactive and fun to read is a big deal. Kids can tap the screen to turn pages and zoom in or out on the text. The books also have a Read to Me function that has professional narration of the stories not just a robotic voice.

“Through this partnership, we’re able to provide our young fans with a revolutionary new way to experience and enjoy reading Nickelodeon books,” said Paula Allen, Senior Vice President, Global Publishing, Nickelodeon Consumer Products. “The NOOK Kids platform delivers an interactive way for kids to engage with their favorite Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob and Dora by using this exciting technology.”
