The next generation of MacBook Pros are looking awesome already. AppleInsider reports that “people familiar with the matter” have informed them that Apple has several prototypes of the new Pro working in their labs. These next-gen machines are capable of switching automatically between integrated and discrete graphics processors.

Currently, Pro owners must toggle between their Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics core and their discrete 9600M GT processor. This is quite the pain in the ass, even requiring users to log out and than log back in to activate the change. It makes sense that Apple would want to close this gaping (and annoying) weakness in their Pro line.

Currently, Nvidia's Optimus Technology (which allows auto-switching) only works on Windows 7. However, that is apparently due only to “software limitations” that Nvidia and Apple are busy patching up right now. Seems plausible to me.
