Today is a strange day. I read several stories on my usual news papers today that are so out there that I double checked the date several times as I was thinking it must already be April Fools' Day (April 1st). First I read that Arnold Schwarzenegger is coming back as The Governator in an animated TV Series. Really! His nickname is becoming a Super Hero characters' name now. The story is true. See the LA Times. The other story I cannot mention here, it is too atrocious. It involves testicles and that is all I can say.
But back to the tech world. According to CNN, Google is working on a mobile phone app that can identify faces. You would just take a photo of a person and the app will let you access personal information of the recognized person. Technology is great, but seriously giving everybody a tool to identify people everywhere is just wrong.
Google is aware apparently of the privacy issues and says that users would have to opt-in to this service. Who would do that? What will happen is that users will not read the fine print and boom they agreed to be identified with this new scary app.
Google is supposedly convinced to be able to find a good application for this app. Here it is. Forget about giving that to every consumer out there. Sell it to law enforcement and move on to developing a social network that can compete against Facebook. Just do not launch it tomorrow on April 1st, nobody would believe you would be able to compete with Facebook.
