Barnes & Noble has been peddling the Nook Color eReader for a while now. This eReader is different from most on the market because instead of using an eInk or electronic paper screen, the Color uses a color LCD touchscreen and it runs Android. The fact that it runs Android opens up all sorts of potential for the thing to be used as a tablet.
The latest firmware update for the Nook Color is now available and the update brings the Nook some of the features that users have been clamoring for to make it more like a tablet and less like an eReader. The update brings apps to the Color and among the apps are some for email, an enhanced web experience, and new content for adults and kids.
“NOOK Color offers the best reading experience of any device, and now delivers the most popular tablet features such as engaging apps so customers can play, learn and explore, free, built-in email, an Android operating system update for enhanced Web browsing and more interactive content,” said William Lynch, Chief Executive Officer of Barnes & Noble. “With our new NOOK Apps program, we’ve partnered with the world’s best publishers and developers to offer popular brands like Angry Birds, Epicurious, Uno, Lonely Planet, Dr. Seuss, Little Critter and many more quality and entertaining applications. These and other enhancements, plus new ways for adults and children to experience exciting content, make NOOK Color a great alternative to paying double the price – or more – for an expensive tablet. Our easy-to-use, full-featured Reader’s Tablet is available for only $249, and presents the best value of any tablet on the market.”
The new enhanced content for kids is really cool and has kid's books that have other content to go along with them . The update also adds game apps to the mix with popular games like Angry Birds and Sudoku. Some of the new apps are free like the calendar and notes apps and others have to be purchased. Half of the collection are $2.99 and under with most at $5.99 or less. The Nook Email and Nook Friends apps are free.
The update brings the platform to Android 2.2 Froyo and it has support for Flash Player as well with new streaming video capability and more. The enhanced content for kid's books is one of the coolest features though allowing kids to interact with the books they love. The kid's titles offer narration, animation and more.
