Microsoft announced better than expected earnings for the last quarter. Microsoft's third-quarter revenue is $16.43 billion for the quarter ended Mar. 31, 2011. This is a 13% increase from the same period of the prior year. The net income was $5.23 billion. Microsoft market cap stands at $224 billion. Apple's revenue for the last quarter revenue was $24.67 and the net income was $5.99 billion. Apple's market cap is at $320 billion. Right now Apple's Apple beats now Microsoft in Market Cap, Revenue and Profits.
Microsoft's revenue growth cam from great Office 2010, Xbox and Kinect sales. Windows 7 still remains the fastest selling OS with 350 million licenses sold, but revenue is down 4% in that sector.
What does this mean?
Microsoft is tied still to the PC. Apples growth is driven by the iPhone and the iPad. Microsoft still does not have a Tablet OS and their Windows Phone 7 OS is far behind in market share. Microsoft is not hurting, but they really need to latch on to the growth in smartphone and tablet segments soon.
