As reported earlier, Windows Chief Steve Sinofsky will attend the AllThingsD conference next week. In the first report of this it was assumed that we would see Windows 8. Business Insider now has more specific information from sources that Microsoft will demo Windows 8 for Tablets. I actually think the Microsoft tablet OS will have a different name and not actually be based on Windows 8. Windows 8 is expected to be released in 2012, maybe even as late as 2013. My bet is rather that Microsoft will unveil a Windows Tablet 7 OS next week.
Microsoft needs a tablet OS badly. I expect that they will extend the Windows Phone 7 OS to work for tablets. This is what Apple did with iOS. The Windows Phone 7 OS is not too shabby. A tablet version of it could launch Microsoft right into the Tablet OS war with HP's WebOS, Google's Android and also of course Apple's iOS. Apple is so far ahead right now in terms of market share though, that the battle for Microsoft is first with the other tablet operating systems.
