Over the weekend a confusing rumor first said that new MacBook Air laptops will be released on Wednesday. The rumor then later got revised to say that unlocked iPhone 4s are coming instead. Well, the rumor got already reality as Apple just launched the sale of unlocked iPhone 4s on the US Apple Store.
The 16GB iPhone 4 sells for $649 and the 32GB iPhone 4 sells for $749. Unlocked iPhone 4s have been available in Europe for a while now. In Germany the unlocked 16GB iPhone 4 sells for 629 Euro (~$908) and the 32GB iPhone 4 has a price-tag of 739 Euro (~$1,066).
The 16GB iPhone 4 is $260 cheaper and the 32GB iPhone 4 even $317 in the US compared to Germany. Yes, the Dollar is weak, but that makes unlocked iPhone 4 a bargain for Europeans visiting the United States.
Why Apple is all of a sudden offering unlocked iPhones in the US is still a mystery. Note that only the GSM model is available unlocked. Apple says that the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice if you prefer to use local carriers when abroad.
More details on the Apple Store.
We still expect the new iPhone 5 to be launching in September. That is in only three months. If the iPhone 4 is available unlocked, I would assume that the iPhone 5 will also sell as unlocked version.
