RAM Mount Twist Lock Suction Cup Mount for iPhone 4 Review

A few weeks back I checked out the Scosche DashDock that was universal and would fit all sorts of gadgets. If you want something more specific to the iPhone 4 and you don’t use a case the RAM Twist Lock suction Cup Mount for iPhone 4 might be perfect. Read on for all for the details.

Specifications

The RAM-B-166-AP9U RAM mount for iPhone 4 I am checking out today is two parts. It comes with the suction cup and the arm and with a holder molded to specifically fit the iPhone 4 without a case. The entire mount and holder for the iPhone sells for $37.89 and is available right now.

In Use

I really like the RAM Mount cases. I used one when I was at the racetrack with my car running around the road course to hold my iPhone while I used a GPS lap timer. The track was very fast with some bumpy sections and the car pulled a lot more Gs than you ever will on the street. The Powerful suction cup of the articulating arm stayed put with no problems even over bumps at triple digit speeds.

The holder is steady as a rock too so you can clearly read directions and see maps if you use it to hold your phone for GPS navigation. Setting the RAM-B-166-AP9U up includes screwing the articulating arm to the suction cup base and then screwing the iPhone 4 holder to the plate on the end of that arm. The whole process takes only a few minutes. You can remove the iPhone 4 holder and put any other RAM Mount holder on the same articulating arm if you change devices in the future.

The RAM-B-166-AP9U arm has to big wing nuts that you can turn with your hand. With them loose, you can adjust the angle of the iPhone to suit your needs without any issues at all. Once you get the position you want just tighten them down and the RAM-B-166-AP9U will stay where you set it. The suction cup is easy to active and easy to remove. You push it to your window or other surface and then flip the rotating toggle from off to on and it sticks like glue.

The only downside to the RAM-B-166-AP9U or any of the RAM mounts that use the big and sturdy arm is that they are bulky. They are attractively designed devices, but I am not a fan of having to look at them all the time on my windshield. I just put the mount on when I need to use my iPhone for navigation or at the track. You can mount the holder and just leave it in place if you want though and it will stay until you want it off. When you do want to remove the suction cup just flick that toggle back to off, grab the tab on the soft rubber portion of the suction cup, and pull and the mount removes.

Verdict

Pros

  • Great strength and stability
  • Easy to install
  • Stays put no matter how crazy you drive

Cons

  • Bulky and takes up a lot of space on your windshield

Conclusion

The RAM-B-166-AP9U is a great little iPhone 4 holder that will only work without a came on your smartphone. If you can live with the bulk, you will not find a better crafted iPhone holder on the market.
