The iPhone 5 Lite rumor starts to stick. Last week Bloomberg made the rumor of a new budget iPhone popular again. Today, according to AppleInsider, Deutsche Bank analyst Chirs Whitmore gets more specific on what a iPhone 5 Lite would be. He believes that Apple will target the huge pre-paid market with an iPhone 4S that is priced between $300 and $500 without contract. The global pre-paid market is 2/3rds of the overall potential customer base. An affordable prepaid iPhone offer would reach huge new customer segments.
Whitmore argues that the iPhone 4S would look like the 8GB iPod touch. This is a weird comparison. I argued already in this post that Apple already has a budget iPhone. It is called iPhone 3GS. Apple could easily market the iPhone 3GS as a pre-paid phone if they wanted too.
