The rumor mill is still back and forth on wether there will be a new iPad this year or not. According to AppleInsider analyst Craig Berger from FBR Capital Markets issued a note to investors that he heard whispers about an iPad 2 Plus coming this fall. The iPad 2 Plus would have a display with 250-300ppi. This would not be quite a retina display as the iPhone 4 is offering.
I believe Apple will not release an iPad 2 Plus. It would not make much sense as it will confuse consumers. Today there are already several choices to make when purchasing an iPad. Storage size, connectivity and color need to be decided upon. Adding another type of iPad makes things complicated for consumers. It also actually makes it complicated for Apple to manage supply. How many people would by the more expensive, but higher resolution iPad 2 plus versus the normal iPad 2.
ThisIsMyNext has some additional information about the iPad 2 Plus. They call it iPad HD and it is supposed to be aimed at the professional market. They position the iPad HD as a MacBook Pro versus the MacBook. I still find it confusing, but hey anything is possible.
I think it is still much more likely that Apple will release the iPad 3 in 2012. It will not just have a higher screen resolution, but also offer more performance and maybe some other new tricks.
