Specifications

The Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive has 640GB of storage space. It comes with its own short USB cable and you need no AC adapter to use the drive. It also has software installed to make backups for your computer. You can buy the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive for $193 right now.

Benchmarks

To test the performance of the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive I took big folder of test files and timed the process of writing the 3.23GB folder to the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive and then I timed it writing the same folder from the USB drive back to a system drive. It took 3 minutes and 12 seconds to write the file to the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive and 2 minutes and 7 seconds to write it from the USB drive to the system drive.

In Use

The thing I like about the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive is that it doesn't look like an external HDD. That is a big deal to some people that value style as much as performance. The little 2.5-inch HDD that has 640GB of storage is inside a black leather pouch that is stitched and looks like a nice wallet. The back of the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive has a little USB port sticking out and a blue LED under the port that glows when it is plugged in.

The LED also flashes when the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive is accessing data. It's cool to have so much storage space in the small size of the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive. My Windows Vista test computer immediately recognized the drive when I plugged it into the USB port and I needed no drivers. Once you access the drive under the My Computer icon, you can install the software for backing your computer up.

The software works well and you can make it back up any files you want. You can also use the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive to move files back and forth from the home and office. Just keep in mind that whatever you put on the Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive is not encrypted so the data can be accessed by anyone.

Verdict

Pros

  • Good looking
  • No AC adapter
  • Good performance

Cons

  • No encryption

Conclusion

The Verbatim 640GB Wallet Drive is a great little portable hard drive with nice performance and good looks. Just don’t put any files on it you don’t want people to see and you will be fine.
