MotionX GPS Drive will work on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS 3.0 and higher. The app sells for $0.99 and offers 30 days of service with the purchase and tons of other options. The latest version has updated maps, custom voices, and Facebook integration.
I rarely travel so far from home that I don’t know how to get to where I am going and back. I do on occasion go on road trips though. The fact that road trips are rare means that I don’t have a normal GPS device. A couple weeks ago, I had to travel to San Antonio, which is about six hours from where I live. I decided to download the MotionX GPS Drive app on my iPhone 4 and try the app.
The latest version cost me $0.99 and gave me 30 days of voice guidance. I entered the address I was going to and the app had my route ready to go in a few minutes. I thought I would download the maps to the iPhone so it would keep track even if I lost my data connection on my phone. After waiting several hours for the download to complete I stopped that download with more than half the maps left to go.
The app gives turn-by-turn driving directions just like any GPS will do only it uses your iPhone. If you are going to use the app you need a windshield mount of some sort and a car charger. The GPS features will run the battery down fast. The new app will see the traffic where you are going and knows based on the day and time what the traffic is likely to be like.
I know on my trip I left very early in the morning and I thought I would hit traffic with the route the GPS was taking me. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the app MotionX GPS Drive chose was perfect and not once did I have to sit in traffic. When I left San Antonio, it was about 2pm on a Saturday. The app routed me differently than it did when I was heading to my destination. It used side roads rather than the main highways. At first, I thought the app was going crazy and then I decided to just follow its route.
I was so glad I followed the route the MotionX GPS Drive app chose for me. The reason it was routing me on side roads was that it knew at the time of day I was traveling that the major highway merges would be backed up with traffic. I watched frustrated drivers sitting on the highway while I zipped by on the service road. There is no telling how much travel time MotionX GPS Drive saved me that day.
The app isn't perfect though. My biggest issue was that the voice on the driving directions is very quiet. I simply could not hear it. I connected the iPhone to a Bluetooth hands free device so I could hear the directions and it worked just fine. Just be prepared to look at the screen when you need to turn or use headphones or Bluetooth to hear.
I also had one issue with the app where I missed a turn. Rather than telling me to turn around or routing me directly back to the highway I had just left, the app sent me on small two lane back roads for hours. My travel time was about the same in reality, but I would have much preferred to stay on the main roads. Overall, the MotionX GPS Drive app is awesome.
The MotionX GPS Drive is easily the best GPS nav app I have used for the iPhone. It’s cheap and works very well.
