Today I am going to look at the cool Griffin Helo TC remote control helicopter. This little remote controlled helicopter will allow you to fly around the house using the iPhone as the remote control. Read on for all of the details on the Griffin Helo TC helicopter.
The Griffin Helo TC sells for $49.99 and it is available right now. The device comes with the pack for connecting to use iPhone, extra rotors, and an extra rear propeller. It charges via USB and can fly for about ten minutes per charge.
The Griffin Helo TC is very similar to the iHelicopter I looked at not too long ago. The main difference is that it is much easier to control the Griffin Helo TC than the iHelicopter. Whereas the iHelicopter was always out of control, the Griffin Helo TC was easy to dial in for flight.
I still don’t care for the way the Helo TC app works though. It has a stick for the helicopter direction and a slider for the throttle that controls altitude that stays put. I would rather have the option for having the throttle only stay where you want it if the stick is held in place. It's hard to slide the virtual throttle control up and down accurately.
I do like that the Griffin app has a red button that you can push and the copter will drop back to the ground quickly if you are about to hit something. The downside is that the Griffin Helo TC panic button is virtual so I had to look down to find it and always hit whatever the object was anyway.
The directional controls are easy to use and accurate. The copter is as durable as most toys of this type. The IR signals are sent from the app out through the headphone port to the IR emitter that clips onto the iPhone. It works well and the controls are accurate.
The Griffin Helo TC would be perfect if the app had an update to allow a virtual stick for the throttle that springs back in place when you let it go. I would also definitely want to get a trim control for the throttle. It can be a challenge trimming the helicopter for a hover. The tilt control method was nearly impossible for me to use.
The Griffin Helo TC is a cool helicopter and is the best iOS controlled RC toy I have used so far.
