Netflix is fumbling right now and that is a perfect time for Apple to swoop in and take over the movie streaming market. The WSJ reports today that Apple is in negotiations with Hollywood to allow iPad and iPhone owners stream movies via the iTunes Store.
Right now Apple is offer only movies that need to be downloaded. If you have good bandwidth you can usually start watching right away while the movie continues to download, at least on a PC. On the iPad you actually need to wait until the movie has downloaded to start watching it. This sucks big time. Instant streaming of movies would be the solution.
The Hollywood studios have cooked up a streaming platform called UltraViolet. Apple is also a member of that consortium. If Apple is making iTunes work with UltraViolet is not clear yet. UltraViolet would be usable on iDevices via special apps.
