Sony unveiled the HMZ-T1 Head mounted Display (HMD) back in August. Sony offers the HMZ-T1 for pre-order on Sony.com and the HMD will ship on Monday, October 26. We got informed by Sony that only limited quantities are available. So if you want one, it is smart to pre-order today on Sony.com.

The Sony HMZ-T1 is a personal 3D viewer with HD resolution (1,280x720px) delivered through two newly developed 0.7-inch OLED panels. The Sony HMZ-T1 marks the first HMD marketed to consumers since the last wave in the early nineties. Will the HMZ-T1 make HMDs mainstream? I have my doubts. Even if the visual experience is awesome, the HMZ still looks very bulky. Sony tried its best to make it look cool, but it is massive. Back in the nineties the experience using an HMD with headtracking was already awesome, but wearing the bulky devices was a pain. Oh, and do not expect to use the HMZ-T1 on the go. This HMD comes with a big setop box that needs to be connected to your home theater setup.

The 3D viewing experience with the HMZ-T1 is like viewing a 750-inch screen from 20m distance. Basically you feel like sitting in a 3D movie theater all by yourself.

Because 3D is delivered through two panels there is no cross talk. The HD resolution of the panels should deliver a very clear 3D image. The viewing angle is still pretty limited with 45 degrees. The audio on the HMZ-T1 supports 5.1 virtual surround.
