Samsung announced their Q4 earnings today and surprised with record smartphone sales that make it the number #1 in smartphone sales. Samsung was able to push out 28 million smartphones, which is almost 4x compared to the same quarter last year.
Major driver of Samsung smartphone sales is the Galaxy S2, which sold already beyond 10 million units. Apple had a weaker than expected Q4 because of the iPhone 4S release. Still Samsung was able to sell 10 million more smartphones than Apple is quite a high mark to reach. The current Holiday quarter will though be more interesting as Apple has now the iPhone 4S on the market.

Update:
Samsung actually did not announce sales of 28 million smartphones in their quarterly earnings. The number is supposed to come from an analyst. Actually we do not really know how many smartphones Samsung sold. See also The Loop. So Apple is still the #1 smartphone seller? we do not know as long as not all companies report sales numbers on the same standards.
