Groupon brings fantasy to Holiday deal shopping with Grouponicus.
Groupon has launched Grouponicus 2011 bringing Holiday deals to 41 cities in the United States and Canada according to Reuters. Groupon plans this year to offer discount deals on bigger items dubbed Epic Deals as well as national deals on electronics and other product categories
Groupon embeds the Holiday deals into a fantasy land called Winterland where you meet the deal bird Groupo. This stuff is clearly for shoppers for too much time on their hands. Groupon is though giving away daily prizes for those who try to learn the Grouponicus lore.
There have been reports that Groupon and other group buying services would kill Black Friday. It is not going to happen as these services are also just another way to present deals. The deals are likely to be the same if they are National. Especially apparent is this in electronics, one of the main product category of Black Friday. The current Grouponicus national online electronics deal is a $112 (+ $6.95 shipping) Coby Kyros (MID-7120-4G) 7-inch Android 2.3 tablet . Walmart offers the Coby Kyros right now for $114.98 (free store pick-up). So the "power of the group" saves me nothing. If I would pick up this tablet in a Walmart store it would be $4 cheaper than on Groupon. The essence of this is, always compare prices and do not trust a group buying deal, just because 1,000 other bought it too.
