Galaxy S II Will Get Ice Cream Sandwich

Following a recent slew of announcements related to Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, Samsung is now adding to the tally of upgrade-able phones.

The manufacturer has confirmed that what is arguably its most treasured phone line right now, the Galaxy S II, "will be receiving ICS, but there are no dates confirmed as yet. We will keep you posted."

The announcement was posted on Samsung's official UK Twitter account.

Samsung joins HTC and Sony Ericsson among the companies that have already provided detailed Ice Cream Sandwich rollout plans. HTC has issued a list of phones that will get the update, stressing that more devices will be added.

Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson has made the bold prediction that all of its 2011 "Xperia" products will be eligible for the upgrade.

There is a precedent for companies announcing Android update plans upon which they cannot follow through, so manufacturers are being extra cautious about announcing their plans this time around.

Almost all of the Ice Cream Sandwich updates will occur next year, though a very select handful will be squeaking through before the end of 2011.

One phone that won't be getting the update at all is the Nexus One, the first true brainchild-phone of Google that has been on the leading edge of updates until now. Unfortunately, it appears the Nexus One is too old now. Its distant cousin, the Galaxy Nexus, which comes with ICS out of the box and was released in Europe today.
