We all know that Microsoft is working hard on getting the Kinect rolled out with a new SDK to make it work with computers in addition to games and other things. The hacker community has been hard at work cobbling together support for computers and other devices for a while. With the new Kinect SDK the support will be official and much easier than trying to make your own support.
Word is now surfacing that Microsoft is getting new hardware for Windows machines ready right now. The new Kinect Hardware will be tailored just for the PC. Microsoft says that they have tailored the components and made firmware adjustments for computer users. It’s well known that the current Kinect doesn't work very well when the user is really close.
With most computer users sitting only feet from their screen I would figure the new Kinect will be designed to work at much shorter distances. Microsoft confirmed a shorter USB cable and a USB dongle to help it work better with other USB gear. The camera will be able to focus on things only 50cm from the lens.
