BMW has announced that it will be making diesel engines for Toyota vehicles that will be sold in Europe. The idea of diesel cars is becoming more appealing to many consumers in America, but there is no word on if the diesel Toyotas will come to the US. BMW will be selling Toyota 1.6L and 2L diesel engines and the cars using the engines will hit Europe in 2014.
Diesel cars are common and popular in Europe thanks to more torque and more efficiency. Gasoline in Europe is very expensive. Toyota is looking to ramp up European sales. Sales in Europe were 12% of the Toyota sales volume last year.
Toyota and BMW are also agreeing to research next generation lithium-ion battery technology. That is the battery tech used in hybrids. The market as a whole is moving increasingly to hybrid vehicles to meet efficiency standards and the demands of many consumers.
