Nintendo has an app store of sorts for the Wii and for the DS portable consoles. Most of the games on the DS and Wii are old school retro titles that are of questionable value to those that didn't grow up playing them to begin with. The app store from Nintendo for the new Wii U will be a much more robust offering.
Along with games for the Wii and other apps, the Wii U app store is also expected to have apps that are just for the touch screen controllers. It would be cool to be able to play a game on the consoles and then play smaller games on the controller alone.
The Daily also says that there will be productivity style apps coming that can run on the controllers. Things like email and other productivity apps would be welcome. I can see that being interesting, you could use the controllers like a tablet around the house.
