A beta version of iOS 5.1 has surfaced online and inside the beta OS is an updated processor core management software that supports both the dual-core A5 chip the iPhone has already and a quad-core chip. 9to5mac reports that the hint on the chips update comes from some sort of hidden panel that described cores and supported hardware for the OS.
The indication would be then that one of the devices is getting a new processor. The site says that the software says /cores/core.3 indicating a third processor for the iPad/iPhone line. The other two existing parts are listed with a core.0 and a core.1 listing.
There is no indication of when that third processor might surface. I also see nothing to indicate that the processor has to be for the iPhone. It could simply be a new processor for the coming iPads we keep hearing rumors about. It would be cool to see a quad core iPhone though.
