The Apple TV is possibly ripe for an update. According to 9to5Mac Best Buy is out of stock and also its internal ordering system is marking the Apple TV as unavailable. The Best Buy online store is not shipping the Apple TV anymore, you would need to pick it up. Only some stores still have stock. Amazon also has no Apple TV stock left.
9to5Mac also reports that in the iOS 5.1 beta release a string identifying the new 2012 Apple TV has been spotted. The codenames for the new Apple TV are AppleTV 3,1 and J33.
One thing that is known so far is that the 2012 Apple TV will likely support Bluetooth 4.0. Will it have apps? I am pretty sure it will. It will also likely support full HD (1080p).
For me personally, a new Apple TV now would be great timing. I just thought about it over the weekend to get a second Apple TV. The iTunes rental movie library is now good enough to replace going to the DVD rental machine. So I will put one Apple TV in the living room and one in my man cave.
