Hulu Plus Comes To Wii

Even though the Wii was originally built as a "gaming-only" machine, it has just added support for another non-gaming video streaming service.

The streaming TV service has just launched its ddicated Wii app. Of course, just like on the PS3, on Google TV, and other devices that have distinct Web browser IDs, the Wii's built-in browser does not allow users to simply go to Hulu.com and watch videos. Instead, Hulu wants you to pay the $7.99 monthly fee for Hulu Plus.

On the flip side, though, you get a dedicated app that makes browsing and playing videos much more convenient. The ability to seamlessly watch TV shows and movies from the comfort of your mobile device or TV has become just as much a selling point of Hulu Plus as the additional content that's available.

The free version of Hulu.com is only accessible through computer browsers. For the un-initiated Wii user, Hulu is offering a two-week trial of its premium service. After that, the $7.99 monthly price kicks in. Unlike Netflix, there is only one tier of service.

Hulu Plus is catching up to Netflix in terms of the number of connected devices. It's available in special apps for the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Internet-connected TVs (though not Google TV), and game consoles. The 3DS is next on the list, which should get Hulu Plus support later this year.

The Wii still has a lot of catching up to do, since between the PS3 and Xbox 360 there are also apps for Vudu, CinemaNow, and Youtube, as well as dedicated video rental and download stores on each platform.
