PlayStation Vita Sales Hit 1.4 Million

And climbing steadily

The Vita is starting to his its stride.

The latest Sony handheld has reached 1.4 million units sold since it first became available in December, with the bulk of units being sold after it came to the US and other markets earlier this year.

The pace isn't quite as fast as the 3DS or even Sony's preceding PSP system, but it is certainly coming back after a poor start.

It was a bit of a rocky start for the Playstation Vita, even dating back to long before the system was released. Last year's massive and devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan crippled Sony's manufacturing facilities and forced the company to delay the Vita release in the US.

It was still able to launch in Japan late last year, but it was met with bugs and glitches that provided nothing but negative publicity for the new system. However, now that it's in the US, things have been taken care of and now the fun begins.

Last month, Sony said the fast clip at which it was able to reach more than a million unit sales is better than its own internal predictions.

At that time Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said, "PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the reaction we're seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling."

There was a lot of skepticism among people in the industry about whether or not there was actually still demand for a dedicated portable gaming system in a world where people are increasingly downloading games to their iPhones, Android phones, and tablets.
