An American man named Richard Lee Norris has received most extensive face transplant in history involving transplanting teeth, the nose, the tongue, and the job from a donor to Norris. The operation took 36 hours and even brought the underlying muscle and bone along with it. The complex surgery was paid for by the United States Navy.
Norris suffered extensive face damage from a gun accident and lived as a recluse for 15 years. In the accident, he lost his lips, most of his nose, and his sense of smell. He is recuperating well according to his doctors and has regained his sense of smell. Anti-rejection medications will be needed for the remainder of his life.
