Google Is Aiming at Apple with an Open Airplay Alternative

Apple's AirPlay functionality has been very popular with users of Apple devices and compatible products. Google, who significantly favors open software and architecture, is set to aim directly at Apple with an open AirPlay alternative. Google is reportedly working on an alternative, and hopes to bring a number of device and software manufacturers on board with its plan. The goal is to provide the industry with open technology to exchange data with second screens and TV connected devices.

This could mean a future where devices from different manufacturers are able to wirelessly stream video and audio to your TV or other device within the home. Apple's AirPlay service only works with Apple products and Apple approved accessories.

Google recently introduced something similar that works only on Google TV devices and Android devices. The service allows users to open videos on their Android smartphones and then have compatible TVs play the content back automatically. There is no indication of when the Google tech might come to market.

About the Geek Mind

The “geek mind” is concerned with more than just the latest iPhone rumors, or which company will win the gaming console wars. I4U is concerned with more than just the latest photo shoot or other celebrity gossip.

The “geek mind” is concerned with life, in all its different forms and facets. The geek mind wants to know about societal and financial issues, both abroad and at home. If a Fortune 500 decides to raise their minimum wage, or any high priority news, the geek mind wants to know. The geek mind wants to know the top teams in the National Football League, or who’s likely to win the NBA Finals this coming year. The geek mind wants to know who the hottest new models are, or whether the newest blockbuster movie is worth seeing. The geek mind wants to know. The geek mind wants—needs—knowledge.
