Google Is Aiming at Apple with an Open Airplay Alternative

Apple's AirPlay functionality has been very popular with users of Apple devices and compatible products. Google, who significantly favors open software and architecture, is set to aim directly at Apple with an open AirPlay alternative. Google is reportedly working on an alternative, and hopes to bring a number of device and software manufacturers on board with its plan. The goal is to provide the industry with open technology to exchange data with second screens and TV connected devices.

This could mean a future where devices from different manufacturers are able to wirelessly stream video and audio to your TV or other device within the home. Apple's AirPlay service only works with Apple products and Apple approved accessories.

Google recently introduced something similar that works only on Google TV devices and Android devices. The service allows users to open videos on their Android smartphones and then have compatible TVs play the content back automatically. There is no indication of when the Google tech might come to market.

Portland Trail Blazers v Los Angeles Clippers
Getty Images In front of a national audience and against a team quickly becoming a Western Conference powerhouse, the Portland Trail Blazers’ LaMarcus Aldridge proved just how dominant he can be, and the Houston Rockets showed they’re still a young team searching for solidarity. Aldridge put up numbers in the last two games in the 2014 NBA Playoffs against the Rockets that would be silly in a video game. In Game 2 on Wednesday ni ...

Why Are NFL’s Cheerleaders Suing the League?

Source: Rant Sports

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports Players in the NFL can command contracts in the tens and sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars. They can do that because they have a union that fights for fair wages. But for the cheerleaders that support the team and provide a team their signature brand, the money isn’t always divvied up like it should be. And they definitely don’t have a union. About 3,000 women try out for teams nationwide with about 10 to 20 making the squad ...

Colorado Rockies: Loss In Extras Provides Glimpse Of Inevitable Season Outcome

Source: Rant Sports

Brentford v Preston North End - Sky Bet League One
Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports After 21 seasons of watching Colorado Rockies baseball, I have decided there is one thing the fan base can count on from season to season – they will break your heart. By no means do I believe it to be intentional, but it is certainly inevitable. I understand in the long scheme of baseball history the Rockies and their fans are still rather new guests to the proverbial dinner table. Therefore by no means am I trying to put the hea ...

Jameson Empire Awards 2014 - Inside Arrivals
Getty Images The 2014 NFL schedule was released on Wednesday night. We all knew who each team was playing and where. What we didn’t know was the bye weeks, which days/nights each game would be on, and which teams would be running a gauntlet all year rather than a walk in the park. The San Francisco 49ers don’t seem to have it too bad. Just looking at their schedule (remember, the draft hasn’t happened yet s ...

Rick Osentoski – USA TODAY Sports With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, the bases loaded and the Chicago White Sox trailing the Detroit Tigers by two runs, rookie infielder Marcus Semien hit his third home run of the 2014 season, a grand slam that barely cleared the wall and pushed Chicago past Detroit and towards a 6-4 victory. How Google completely botched the Google Glass rollout

Source: BGR

Google Glasses
Google Glass has had a rough year in the court of public opinion. Not only has the device become the fodder of jokes for late-night comedians, but even some of its high-profile early adopters have started bashing it with gleeful abandon. Forbes has written a good autopsy of all the mistakes that Google has made when rolling out Glass to the general public and it gives some pretty convincing answers about why something that generated massive media hype when it was f ...

New York Jets Schedule 2014: 10 Wins Highly Possible With New Talent

Source: Rant Sports

2014 Pro Bowl
Getty Images They always say, an easy schedule can mean an easy way into the playoffs. Well, not always. The NFL has just released its 2014 schedule and when you look at what teams the New York Jets have to face, you can easily say they have it down the middle. It’s not so hard on paper but it won’t exactly be a walk in the park either. When all is said and done, the Jets can easily get 10 or more wins if they really utilize all the new talent they’ve acquired so far. Not to mention, w ...

CONCACAF Champions League Title Race Leaves Much to Be Desired

Source: Rant Sports

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports MLS bowed out of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) after the quarterfinals, which left Liga MX clubs to fight amongst each other for the title. Liga MX clubs are often the ones left battling for the championship regardless of how hard MLS clubs try to change that. I’d love to see MLS win CCL with more frequency; I would have rooted for the San Jose Earthquakes to win, even though it is my club’s MLS rival. This year’s CCL ...
