Google Is Aiming at Apple with an Open Airplay Alternative

Apple's AirPlay functionality has been very popular with users of Apple devices and compatible products. Google, who significantly favors open software and architecture, is set to aim directly at Apple with an open AirPlay alternative. Google is reportedly working on an alternative, and hopes to bring a number of device and software manufacturers on board with its plan. The goal is to provide the industry with open technology to exchange data with second screens and TV connected devices.

This could mean a future where devices from different manufacturers are able to wirelessly stream video and audio to your TV or other device within the home. Apple's AirPlay service only works with Apple products and Apple approved accessories.

Google recently introduced something similar that works only on Google TV devices and Android devices. The service allows users to open videos on their Android smartphones and then have compatible TVs play the content back automatically. There is no indication of when the Google tech might come to market.

How publishers tweak content for the social Web

Source: Digiday

There’s an optimization gap in digital publishing. While advertisers are using sophisticated targeting for ads, publishers are usually showing the same content to all readers, no matter who they are or where they came from. Many, however, are slowly catching up. Publishers like Upworthy, BuzzFeed, and The Washington Post are realizing that success in digital publishing is a game of tiny optimizations. Most readers aren’t visiting sites via their front pages, mak ...
