The Real Story Behind Black Friday

Black Friday is the shopping madness taking place in the United States each year. But how did it come to that?

The Real Story Behind Black Friday

Black Friday 2012 is just 2 days away. Black Friday creep pushed Black Friday sales to start on Thanksgiving Day. Consumers will be lining up at stores on Thanksgiving afternoon to get in the stores first to make sure they score doorbuster deals. The shopping madness goes on the whole night and the whole Black Friday. How did we arrive here? Business Week published today a very interesting story that reveals the real origin of Black Friday

The article reveals that the common believe Black Friday marks the day retailers start to turn making the yearly profit. I thought that too. The real origin of the name Black Friday is from the 50s. Factory workers called the day after Thanksgiving Black Friday, because a lot of workers did not show up for work.

The use of Black Friday in sales started in the 60s in Philadelphia. Police man called the day after Thanksgiving Day Black Friday because of the mad traffic in downtown as holiday shoppers and football fans pored into downtown.

The article has some more neat facts I have never heard about Black Friday. Read it on Business Week and the check out our comprehensive Black Friday 2012 Deals coverage.

About the Geek Mind

The “geek mind” is concerned with more than just the latest iPhone rumors, or which company will win the gaming console wars. I4U is concerned with more than just the latest photo shoot or other celebrity gossip.

The “geek mind” is concerned with life, in all its different forms and facets. The geek mind wants to know about societal and financial issues, both abroad and at home. If a Fortune 500 decides to raise their minimum wage, or any high priority news, the geek mind wants to know. The geek mind wants to know the top teams in the National Football League, or who’s likely to win the NBA Finals this coming year. The geek mind wants to know who the hottest new models are, or whether the newest blockbuster movie is worth seeing. The geek mind wants to know. The geek mind wants—needs—knowledge.
