One of the most ballyhooed products of the year, the HP Slate, may have just been killed. TechCrunch reports that a source has informed them that Hewlett-Packard nixed the whole project due to the unsatisfactory performance of Windows 7 as a tablet OS. Microsoft finally gets it.
HP may also abandon Intel-based hardware, due to power concerns. Battery life and speed-of-use are quickly becoming the top two features for a tablet computer. WebOS, designed for a mobile device, is excellent at both. In addition, it has (arguably) the best multi-tasking set-up of any mobile OS.
In the meantime, we'll probably see the current Slate reworked for Android and released at some point in the next year. The Slate looked great. Android might improve battery life enough to make the Slate viable against the iPad.
