Sony Playstation 3 External Hard-drive to run Linux?

Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi mentions in an interview with Japanese Watch Impress that the Sony PS3 will not have an internal hard-drive, but external ones.
Strange enough those external Sony PS3 external HDDs are supposed to run Linux.
The interview also makes some indications that the Sony PS3 will run not just games but also software applications.
