Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter Review

There is a lot to be said for dual monitor setups and even triple monitor setups. They allow you to get more information open on screen at once without having to switchback and forth between windows. The catch for some is that their computers don’t offer a second video output and if you are looking to add a third display you will need something like the product we are looking at today, the Tritton See2 USB to VGA video adapter.

Benchmarks

Features & Specifications
The Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter has recently been updated, and can now support screen resolutions of up to 1680 x 1050 in 16-bit color. 32-bit color is available, but you are resolution limited to a max resolution of 1440 x 900 to get 32-bit color. You can use the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter to extend your desktop, mirror your desktop or as your primary desktop.

The mirroring function is great for presentations where you want the audience to see what you are doing on a larger screen, but want to be able to see well yourself. Installing the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter is as easy as putting the drivers CD into your optical drive and running setup. After the drivers are installed, you plug the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter into an available USB port and you are ready to work.

You will need to be sure your display supports VGA connections or that you have an adapter since the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter only has an analog D-sub connection. Supported operating systems include Windows 2000 SP4, XP home & Pro, plus XP tablet edition.

Some notebook computers lack an output for an external monitor, the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter is the perfect solution to this problem so long as the laptop has an available USB 2.0 port. You can also use it to add a second display to a desktop computer than has onboard graphics and lacks an additional video output.

Installation & Use
Once installed and connected the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter doesn’t have the muscle for all tasks you might want to throw at it. Namely if you are a gamer, don’t expect to game with the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter, it just won’t happen. If you are a graphic artist that is into heavy CAD or multimedia development, chances are this adapter won’t work well for your applications either.

What the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter is good for is extending your primary desktop. I particularly liked to put my email and IM screens onto the second display. It is also a great way to be able to have a website source open if you are pulling data from different places. There is also more than enough muscle for watching streaming video online such as movie trailers and YouTube. I saw no skipping or dropped frames when I tried this on my test machine equipped with an Intel QX6700 CPU.

One of the big bonuses of the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter is that you don’t need to open your computer up to install it. That is a big deal for lots of people since they may not have the physical slots needed for an additional video card and may lack the expertise to perform a video card installation. Anyone can install the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter with ease and be ready to work in a few minutes on a second display.

Verdict

Conclusion

Pros

  • Easy to install
  • Supports resolutions high enough for 21” LCDs

Cons

  • Lacks video muscle for higher-end applications and games

Verdict
If you want a second screen for work with spreadsheet or web browsing the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter is a great product. If you have hopes of using the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter with GPU intensive applications you are out of luck. When used for its intended purpose, the Tritton SEE2 USB to VGA Adapter is a great product that works very well.
