Philips announced the Blu-ray Disc, DVD and CD writer for PCs at the CES 2006. I oversaw this release, but stumbled over it again, when the first review of a Blu-ray disc writer appeared last week.
The Samsung SH-B022 Blu-ray writer is only able to write Blu-ray discs. The Philips SPD7000 is able to write Blu-ray, DVD and CD discs, thus the name TripleWriter. The Pioneer Blu-ray writer BDR-101A we reported about in December is also supporting DVD writing.
For the near future DVDs and CDs will not go away. To have one drive to burn all three kinds is definitely a good thing. Philips has not set a price yet, but said they will ship the SPD7000 in the 2nd half of 2006.
More details in this Philips press-release.
