Sony Pictures announces that the first Blu-ray disc movies will start shipping May 23rd in the United States.
The only Blu-ray disc player available at this date will be the Samsung BD-1000. The BD-1000 is supposed to be followed shortly by a Pioneer BD player, Sony BD player along with a BD compatible VAIO PC from Sony.
The Toshiba HD DVD is going to be available already in March. This is 2 month for early adopters to either jump the gun on HD or wait for Blu-ray and decide then.
It also looks like that the HD DVD Players are going to be considerably cheaper than Blu-ray players. On top of that the Sony PS3 is no where to be seen at the Blu-ray launch.
There will be 12 Blu-ray titles available on May 23rd. A second wave of Blu-ray disc releases follows June 13th.
More details in this Sony Pictures press-release and on the Sony Pictures Blu-ray site.
