Most of us shoot lots and lots of pictures with our digital cameras. Many of those pictures sit on our computers or cameras and never get seen. The key to solving this problem is a digital photo frame. These frames allow us to take raw digital images directly from our cameras and view them on a picture frame. Today we are going to look at a new digital frame from Viewsonic called the DF88W. Read the full review for all the details.
Features & Specifications
The Viewsonic DF88W 8-inch Digital Photo Frame has some nice features. The frame has 128Mb of onboard memory, which is a lot for a frame this size. The frame supports images up to 12 megapixels in size and features an alarm clock and calendar. A built-in speaker allows for music slideshows and sounds from video files. The frame is made from a clear acrylic and blue LEDs can be turned on or off to illuminate the frame.
The Viewsonic DF88W 8-inch Digital Photo Frame has an 8-inch TFT active color matrix LCD with a 7.32-ich viewable image size. The screen resolution is 800 x 480 and the contrast ratio is 300:1. Viewing angles are 130 degrees horizontal and 110 degrees vertical with brightness of 250 cd/m2. A built-in card reader is compatible with CF, SD, MMC, MS and MS Pro memory cards. Supported video formats include M-JPEG1, MPEG2, and MPEG4. Supported audio format is MP3.
In Use
With the frame coming from Viewsonic I had high expectations for image quality. Viewsonic lived up to the expectations I had for the Viewsonic DF88W 8-inch Digital Photo Frame. I was greeted with the best image quality that I have seen on a digital frame. The images were crisp and bright, skin tones are realistic, and colors are bright and vivid. This is simply the best digital photo frame I have used.
Setting the frame up was easy and amounted to simply attaching the stand, which can be in portrait or landscape orientation, and plugging in the power. A wireless remote is included that allows you to change the photo from across the room. You can also adjust the orientation of images with the remote as well.
Viewing images from the SD card of my camera directly on the frame was easy. All I had to do was plug the SD card into the card reader and choose the card from the menu of the Viewsonic DF88W 8-inch Digital Photo Frame. A USB cable is included with the frame for connecting to your PC. You can transfer movie clips and images to the internal memory via the cable.
Video playback is impressively good with no ghosting or tearing of the video and the sound is passable, about what you expect from a single speaker system. The clear frame is attractive, but may be a bit too modern for some tastes. I would prefer a faux wood grain or a changeable frame. The blue LEDs are interesting and can be turned off when not wanted. The only thing I wished for was the ability to move images from a memory card to the frames internal storage.
Pros
Cons
Verdict
It’s really easy to get a cheap digital photo frame today with horrible image quality. The Viewsonic DF88W 8-inch Digital Photo Frame is simply not in that range. This frame has absolutely first rate image quality and is the best looking digital photo frame I have tested. At an MSRP of $149.99 for an 8-inch frame you can’t go wrong with the Viewsonic DF88W 8-inch Digital Photo Frame.
