CPU Shipments Grow 23% in Q3 2009 Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Research firm IDC has released its numbers for CPU shipments in Q3 2009. According to the firm, CPU shipments grew 23% over the quarter compared to Q2 2009. That is about two times the normal growth quarter to quarter.

IDC reports that the CPU market grew 14% on revenue ending the quarter at $7.4 billion in total sales. Mobile PC processors continue to drive growth in the market. The Intel Atom line of processors for netbooks increased in shipments 35.7% for the quarter. Read more

The new line of SSDs are replacement drives for netbook computers.

Toshiba sent out a press release today announcing the launch of two additions to their 1.8” Serial ATA HDD line of products. The first is the MKxx33GSG series of 5400 RPM 320 GB, 250 GB and 160 GB mobile hard drives. The second new series is the low-power MK1235GSL 120 GB "ultraportable" hard drive. Toshiba brags that these new 1.8" HDDs are substantially tougher than their bulkier cousins.

The manufacturer claims that these new drives can handle up to 1,500 Gs of non-operational shock, and as much as 500 Gs of operational shock. That makes them 50% and 25% (respectively) tougher than their 2.5" counter-parts. These 5400 RPM devices are capable of a transfer rate of 830 MB/s, quite impressive by any standards.

The drive, called the S596, uses a 2.5-inch form factor, and connects via SATAII. The SSD promises to load apps five times faster than normal HDDs. The drive uses next generation flash technology and a DDR2 SDRAM buffer to provide a boot up time of 20 seconds running Windows 7.

That boot time is a 40% improvement compared to a normal SSD. The drive will come in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacities. The SSD is compatible with both PC and Mac computers and it has a miniUSB port built in allowing it to be used as an external storage device. Read more

The card in the leaked images has an 8-pin and a 6-pin power connector to give it enough juice.

The card is a whopping 13.5-inches long, which means that many cases won’t be able to fit the card inside thanks to its length. Apparently, AMD already forced the site to remove the performance specs listed. Read more

The feature is called Virtual WiFi and the developer used the feature to create a free app called Connectify that was released as beta last week.

The app allows several Windows computers to share a single internet connection and it shows up as a real wireless access point. The app also allows the user to join a WiFi hotspot and still run the app to share the connection on the same networking card. Read more
