DataWind announced today that they are launching the PocketSurfer2, ultra-thin, portable internet communications device. The claim to fame for the PocketSurfer2 is that there are no charges once you buy the device and it allows you to view webpage’s in their full HTML layout with graphics, java support.

The screen has a 640 x 240 resolution and display full color pages. A backlit QWERTY keyboard that you use with your thumbs makes typing easy and a mouse pointer is integrated as well. Battery life is five hours of active usage and five days on standby. Connectivity is via built-in GPRS modem and SIM.

DataWind claims that page load times are less than seven seconds over GPRS thanks to patented technology used in the PocketSurfer2. One of the coolest parts is that there is no monthly service fees associated with the device. The first full year of service with 20 hours of usage per month is included in the purchase price. Heavy users can pay an additional GBP 5.99 a month for unlimited usage. The second year of service is a max of GBP 40.00. The cost of the PocketSurfer2 itself is GBP 179.99 or about $370 here in the U.S. Too bad it seems the device is not going to be available for U.S. geeks. Via PocketSurfer
