I got the chance to play lots of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars yesterday at Quakecon. The game looks great, I left last year thinking it was a clone of Battlefield 2142, after taking another look at it this year the game is similar, but enough different to keep fans of the Quake series happy.
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has a totally different feel than the other Quake games mostly due to the much larger outdoor environments the game is played in. The addition of more vehicles, flight and other features to the game do still draw similarities to Battlefield 2142, I even saw an enemy mech on the map we played at Quakecon.
Controls for the game were good and intuitive, it did take me a while to figure out that “G” gets into vehicles, I am used to “E” doing that on most FPS games. I am really looking forward to quake Wars coming out, I think it forces much more cooperative play between game classes than other games do.
I say that because there are certain things that must be done to win the level that each class must accomplish. For example, the level we played required an engineer to fix the bridge and allow the other troops over a river. Run out of engineers and you can’t complete the tasks.
